Florida officials face scrutiny over religious vouchers and sanctuary policies

Florida political figures are facing scrutiny over the application of state authority regarding religious institutions and local governance. Attorney General James Uthmeier recently issued a letter to the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops, suggesting that religious schools could lose taxpayer-funded vouchers if they mandate vaccinations. Critics have pointed out a perceived inconsistency, noting that Florida currently allows voucher-supported religious schools to use religious exemptions to deny admission to LGBTQ students or students with same-sex parents.

In a separate development, Byron Donalds, a candidate for Florida governor, has pledged to remove local officials who implement ‘sanctuary’ policies. Donalds’ comments follow actions by Uthmeier, who has previously threatened to remove municipal officials in cities such as Fort Myers, Key West, Tampa, and Orlando for their stance on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) cooperation. This tension is highlighted in Miami, where Mayor Eileen Higgins has expressed intentions to revisit the city’s 287(g) agreement regarding undocumented immigrants.
