Florida Oyster Reef Restoration and Turkey Wastewater Upgrade Yield Ecological Gains

A long‑term environmental project off Florida’s coast turned over 500,000 tons of discarded oyster shells into a thriving reef in the Gulf of Mexico. After about twenty years the shells dissolved, releasing calcium and forming a biological substrate that now supports thousands of marine species, improves water quality and curbs harmful algal blooms.

In Turkey’s Black Sea city of Trabzon, a GEF‑funded BBSEA initiative coordinated by UNOPS examined existing wastewater collection and treatment facilities. The on‑site assessment identified infrastructure gaps, climate‑risk concerns and investment priorities needed to reduce sewage discharge into the Black Sea, supporting a cleaner marine environment and sustainable water management.

Both projects illustrate how targeted ecological interventions can restore marine habitats and mitigate pollution in distinct coastal regions.
