Florida pension fund sues New York Times over editorial oversight
The State Board of Administration of Florida and the National Center for Public Policy Research have filed a lawsuit in New York against The New York Times Company. The plaintiffs, who are shareholders, are seeking access to internal corporate books and records to investigate whether the company’s board has fulfilled its fiduciary duties regarding the oversight of editorial standards.
The lawsuit alleges that the newspaper has published materially false or baseless assertions, specifically regarding its coverage of Israel and the Israel-Hamas war. The petitioners argue that a lack of board-level oversight has allowed journalistic standards to be “weaponized within the company to serve the personal agendas of unchecked editors.”
The legal action is supported by claims from an anonymous whistleblower, a former video desk employee, who reported instances of anti-Israel bias and antisemitism to the company on at least 15 occasions between 2019 and 2026. The whistleblower alleged that internal complaints were dismissed by management and human resources.
A spokesperson for The New York Times stated that the lawsuit has “no merit” and is a “transparent attempt to exert agenda-driven pressure against an independent media organization.” The company intends to contest the case, characterizing it as an effort to chill First Amendment-protected journalism.
