Florida primaries reveal internal party conflicts

Florida has transitioned from a swing state to a Republican stronghold, with the GOP gaining nearly 2 million more registered voters than Democrats since Ron DeSantis became governor. While statewide general elections may no longer be competitive between the two major parties, recent primary results indicate intense internal ideological conflicts within both the Democratic and Republican parties.

In the Democratic primaries, centrist Representative Jared Moskowitz and establishment figure Debbie Wasserman Schultz secured victories. However, statewide races highlighted a sharp divide: former Republican congressman David Jolly won the Democratic gubernatorial nomination after switching parties, explicitly stating, “I reject socialism. I’m a capitalist.” He will run alongside Angie Nixon for a statewide office, a Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member who defeated establishment candidate Alex Vindman in the U.S. Senate primary.
