Florida primary elections see five LGBTQ+ Democrats advance

Five LGBTQ+ Democrats have advanced in the Florida primary elections for the Florida House. The successful candidates include Jane Aman, Felipe Sousa Lazaballet, Samuel Vilchez Santiago, Luis Salazar, and Todd Delmay.

Equality Florida, an organization that endorsed the candidates, reported an 81 percent success rate for its endorsed candidates. The group's political arm, Equality Florida Action PAC, stated that the results represent a pushback against the state's conservative political landscape, specifically regarding issues such as book bans and curriculum censorship.

In addition to legislative races, LGBTQ+-backed candidates saw gains in nonpartisan school board contests. In Sarasota County, Megan Tennimon and Beth Mayberry defeated conservative candidates, while Jimmy Glover advanced to a November runoff. In Orange County, Angie Gallo unseated school board member Alicia Farrant, an ally of outgoing Governor Ron DeSantis. Furthermore, ten school board members previously endorsed by Moms for Liberty have opted not to seek reelection.
