Florida Recycles 500,000 Tons of Shells to Restore Gulf of Mexico Oyster Reefs

Between 2007 and 2024 the State of Florida placed more than 500,000 tons of recycled oyster and clam shells on the seabed of the Gulf of Mexico. The shells were collected from seafood restaurants and processing plants and deliberately positioned where historic oyster reefs had disappeared. Bacterial biofilm quickly colonised the shells, creating a foundation for a healthy marine ecosystem. As the shells slowly broke down they released calcium, forming suitable hard surfaces for juvenile oysters and allowing new corals and reef structures to take root. After nearly two decades the effort produced a notable rebound in oyster populations, which in turn improved water quality by filtering seawater.

Researchers linked the restored habitats to broader ecological benefits, noting increased biodiversity and enhanced resilience of coastal ecosystems. The project demonstrates how large‑scale reuse of marine shell waste can serve as an effective tool for coastal restoration.
