Florida Rep. Carlos Giménez warns deporting Haitians under TPS would be a huge mistake
A U.S. Supreme Court decision cleared the way for the Department of Homeland Security to end Temporary Protected Status for certain immigrant groups, putting about 350,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians at risk of deportation. Florida Republican Representative Carlos Giménez appeared on CBS ‘Face the Nation’ and called deporting Haitian TPS holders a “huge mistake,” citing Haiti’s status as a failed state and ongoing humanitarian crisis. He urged that TPS protections be reinstated for Venezuelans affected by recent earthquakes and warned that removing Haitian workers would disrupt U.S. hospitals, nursing homes and manufacturing sectors that rely on their labor. Giménez’s stance reflects a growing bipartisan push, including HR 1689, to shield Haitian migrants from removal until at least 2029.
