Florida reports five equine cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis

Florida has confirmed five cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in horses this year. The most recent case involved a horse in Jackson County that had to be euthanized.

While horses cannot transmit EEE to humans, equine cases serve as an early warning sign for public health officials. The presence of the virus in horses indicates that mosquitoes in the area are carrying the disease, which can eventually bridge from the natural bird-mosquito cycle to humans.

Confirmed equine cases have been reported in Hillsborough, Jackson, Osceola, Seminole, and Volusia counties. The virus typically cycles between wild birds and mosquitoes in swampy habitats, but certain mosquito species can carry the virus to mammals like horses and humans.
