Florida reports fourth death from flesh-eating bacteria

The Florida Department of Health has reported a fourth death in 2026 linked to Vibrio vulnificus, a bacterium commonly referred to as ‘flesh-eating’ bacteria. The most recent fatality was a resident of Broward County between the ages of 75 and 79. So far this year, Florida has recorded 21 cases of the infection.

Previous deaths in 2026 were identified in Bay, Palm Beach, and Marion counties. Health officials note that Vibrio vulnificus is a naturally occurring bacterium found in warm, brackish seawater. Infection typically occurs through the consumption of raw or undercooked shellfish, particularly oysters, or by entering contaminated water through open wounds, cuts, or recent tattoos and piercings.

Officials have linked unusual spikes in certain counties to the impacts of hurricanes Helene and Ian, as severe weather can create standing or floodwaters that increase exposure risks. While healthy individuals may experience mild illness, bloodstream infections caused by the bacterium are fatal approximately 50% of the time.
