Dengue outbreaks surge in São Paulo and Florida

Significant dengue fever outbreaks are being reported in both Brazil and the United States.

In the state of São Paulo, Brazil, health authorities have confirmed over 58,000 cases since the beginning of the year, resulting in 42 confirmed deaths and 30 additional deaths under investigation. The municipality of Taubaté has recorded the highest number of fatalities. In response, the state has implemented the State Health Preparation and Response Plan for the El Niño Phenomenon to manage the expected increase in transmission, supported by over R$ 1.5 billion in funding for primary care.

In Florida, officials are facing a major surge in dengue cases, with the Tampa Bay region, particularly Hillsborough County, serving as an epicenter for locally acquired infections. Reports indicate that Florida has seen over 200 total cases, including both local transmissions and those associated with international travel. Health departments in counties such as Hillsborough, Orange, and Pinellas have intensified mosquito control efforts, including aerial spraying and house-to-house inspections, to combat the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes responsible for spreading the virus.
