Florida sea turtle nesting reaches record levels

Sea turtle nesting has reached record levels along Florida’s Space Coast. Biologists at Canaveral National Seashore have documented more than 17,000 nests, surpassing the previous record of 16,000 set in 2023. Additionally, the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge has seen loggerhead sea turtle nesting break a record that had stood since 1998, with more than 21,800 nests recorded so far this season.

Despite these high numbers, conservationists warn that hatchlings face significant threats from pollution, plastics, and boat strikes. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has issued guidance for beachgoers to protect nesting wildlife. Recommendations include maintaining a distance of at least 50 feet from turtles, avoiding bright lights after dark that can disorient hatchlings, and driving slowly along coastal routes to prevent wildlife accidents.
