Florida sees surge of alligator attacks, including fatal incident

In the past two weeks, Florida has experienced at least three serious alligator attacks. On June 21, a 19‑year‑old snorkeler was bitten by an 8‑foot gator in the Rainbow River near Dunnellon and was hospitalized but released the next day. A week later, 31‑year‑old Brittany Clark of Sacramento was attacked while swimming in the Econlockhatchee River near Orlando; she died from severe trauma while being taken to a hospital. On July 3, 71‑year‑old James McMicken was fishing in a canal near North Fort Myers when a large alligator seized his leg. He freed himself by stabbing the animal’s eyes with his thumb and a fishing pole, was rescued by his dog, and spent several days in a hospital for deep bite wounds.

State wildlife officials responded by capturing and killing multiple large gators in the areas of the attacks and continue trapping efforts. Experts note that summer brings more people to Florida’s waters and that alligators are more aggressive after the breeding season, contributing to the recent rise in human‑gator encounters.
