Florida Space Coast proposed as home for U.S. Space Academy

Florida Senator Ashley Moody has introduced legislation to establish the Florida Space Coast as the headquarters for the newly created U.S. Space Academy. The academy, which was established via executive order, aims to provide career pathways for students entering the Space Force, NASA, and the commercial spaceflight sector.

Proponents argue that the Space Coast is uniquely positioned to host the academy due to its existing infrastructure for military, government, and commercial space operations. Senator Moody noted that the region has seen a 500% increase in launches over the last decade, providing a competitive edge in the international space race.

In Central Florida, local leaders in Orange County are also advocating for the region to be a primary site for the academy. Local political figures, including Orange County mayoral candidate Chris Messina, highlight the potential for high-paying jobs and specialized training to address regional wage disparities. While a formal timeline for construction has not been confirmed, officials suggest that pilot programs could begin as early as possible to prepare the workforce for future space-related roles.
