Florida State fires head football coach Mike Norvell

Florida State University has fired head football coach Mike Norvell following a 36-24 home loss to Clemson. The decision, announced by President Richard McCullough, follows a period of significant decline for the program, which has gone 10-22 since the start of the 2024 season and currently holds a 3-5 record.

Norvell’s departure carries a massive financial burden, with a buyout estimated between $47 million and $50.3 million. This payout, representing 85 percent of his remaining contract through 2031, is among the largest in college football history. The university is also facing significant athletic department debt related to facility renovations.

Defensive coordinator Tony White was also relieved of his duties. Rick Stockstill, a former Middle Tennessee head coach and current FSU director of scouting, has been named interim head coach. The university has hired Daniel Parker to lead a concurrent national search for both a new head coach and a permanent athletic director.
