Florida State University fires athletic director Michael Alford

Florida State University has terminated athletic director Michael Alford, effective immediately. The decision, announced by University President Richard McCullough, follows a period of significant decline in the football program, which has recorded an 8-18 record since the 2023 season.

McCullough cited the need for a leadership restructuring to better navigate the changing financial landscape of college athletics. He emphasized the necessity of generating more revenue to remain competitive with conferences like the SEC and Big Ten. The university is seeking a new leader with strong business expertise to help bridge the revenue gap.

Alford’s tenure was marked by major initiatives, including a $265 million renovation of Doak Campbell Stadium, but also faced criticism regarding a massive contract extension granted to football head coach Mike Norvell. While the dismissal of the athletic director has raised questions about Norvell’s job security, President McCullough has expressed continued vocal support for the coach.

Bruce Warwick, Senior Associate Athletics Director, will serve as the interim athletic director while the university conducts a nationwide search for a permanent replacement.
