Netflix sued by Florida over alleged tracking of children's data
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has filed a lawsuit against Netflix, alleging the streaming service deceived consumers and parents regarding data privacy. The 66-page complaint, filed in St. Johns County, accuses Netflix of tracking extensive behavioral data—including device information, locations, and content interactions like pauses and searches—to build an advertising infrastructure.
The state claims Netflix misled families by marketing its service as a private, ad-free refuge from Big Tech surveillance, only to launch an advertising-supported tier in November 2022. A central component of the lawsuit involves the alleged tracking of children through specialized profiles. Florida officials argue that while Netflix marketed these profiles as safe spaces for minors, the company used the same data-collection systems on children as it does on adults to train algorithms and fuel its advertising business.
In addition to seeking unspecified damages, the lawsuit requests a court order to stop Netflix from monetizing user data and to compel the company to purge improperly collected information from Florida residents. Netflix has rejected the allegations, stating the lawsuit lacks merit and expressing its intention to vigorously defend itself in court.
