Florida sues Pfizer and CEO over COVID-19 vaccine claims

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has filed a 49-page lawsuit against Pfizer and its CEO, Albert Bourla, alleging the company deceived the public regarding the safety and effectiveness of its COVID-19 vaccine. Filed in St. Lucie County under the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, the complaint claims Pfizer withheld information about potential risks, including myocarditis and pericarditis, and failed to disclose that the vaccine had not been tested for its ability to prevent viral transmission.

The lawsuit further alleges that Pfizer used unfair commercial practices to dominate the market, noting that the company earned over $80 billion from vaccine sales. The state also highlighted a significant price increase in 2023, where the cost per dose rose from approximately $30 to between $110 and $130. Florida is seeking a court order to halt these practices, the disgorgement of profits, and civil penalties of up to $10,000 per violation, or $15,000 for violations involving seniors or individuals with disabilities.

Pfizer has rejected the allegations, stating they are baseless and that the company’s representations regarding the vaccine were accurate and science-based. Separately, Pfizer reported positive Phase 2 clinical trial results for its drug candidate Tilrekimig in treating moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis.
