Florida executes inmate James Robertson
James Robertson, 63, was executed by lethal injection at Florida State Prison on Tuesday, October 13. Robertson had been convicted of first-degree murder for the 2008 strangulation of his cellmate, Frank Hart. Robertson explicitly stated that he committed the murder to secure a death sentence and avoid spending the rest of his life in prison. He had waived all legal appeals.
The execution marks Florida’s 17th this year. It follows a period of heightened scrutiny regarding capital punishment in the United States, particularly after a failed lethal injection attempt on Christa Pike in Tennessee two weeks prior. While Florida officials defended their lethal injection protocol as “humane and dignified,” the event has drawn attention from religious leaders and critics.
In a separate development, Governor Ron DeSantis issued a last-minute reprieve for another inmate, 74-year-old William Lee Thompson, who was scheduled for execution on the same day. Thompson’s defense argued that his advanced dementia and other health issues made the procedure inhumane.
