Florida, Uruguay, celebrates Heritage Day with religious and cultural exhibitions

The department of Florida, Uruguay, is preparing for the 32nd edition of Heritage Day, held on October 3 and 4. Under the theme “Indigenous roots: past, present, and future,” the celebrations will include guided tours, cultural activities, and exhibitions across various locations, including Florida, Casupá, and Sarandí Grande.

A central feature of the festivities is the historical exhibition “Capitana y guía. La Virgen de los Treinta y Tres y los Pontífices en Florida,” hosted at the MAVEA. This exhibition showcases documents, images, and objects related to the devotion of the Virgin of the Thirty-Three, the Patroness of Uruguay, and her connection to various popes.

Key items on display include papal bulls regarding the Virgin's patronage by Pope John XXIII, indigenous baptismal records from the Pintado chapel, and gifts left by Pope John Paul II during his visit to the region. The program also aims to incorporate “youth heritage” through modern cultural expressions, such as freestyle competitions.
