Florida woman charged with attempted murder after setting man on fire

Tanisha Shelton, 45, has been arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder and arson following an attack in Florida on Saturday, October 24. According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, Shelton was involved in a heated verbal dispute with 33-year-old Nathaniel Devon Mathis earlier in the day.

After initially leaving the scene and making threats, Shelton allegedly returned several hours later carrying a bucket containing a plastic bag filled with an unknown liquid accelerant. Police report that she asked a witness to borrow a lighter before dousing Mathis in the accelerant and setting him on fire.

Emergency responders arrived at the intersection of Northwest 63rd Street and Northwest 25th Avenue to find Mathis unconscious. He was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center with second- and third-degree burns covering at least 80 percent of his body. Medical staff stated that Mathis is in critical condition and is not expected to survive.
