Floridia Mayor redirects threat restitution to anti-mafia project

Marco Carianni, the mayor of Floridia, has announced his decision to decline personal financial compensation intended as restitution for threats and intimidation he received while in office. Instead of receiving the approximately 22,000 euros from the Ministry of the Interior for personal moral damages, the funds will be redirected toward a public utility project dedicated to remembering victims of the mafia.

The decision follows a series of seven anonymous, threatening letters sent to the mayor, which prompted an investigation by the Prosecutor's Office of Syracuse. The funds are part of a national fund for legality and the protection of local administrators, which has a total budget of 6 million euros for 2026. Carianni stated that the money will be used to create a lasting public work of memory and legality within the community.
