Floridia, Sicily, faces lifestyle shifts due to extreme heatwaves

In Floridia, Sicily, extreme and prolonged heatwaves are fundamentally altering daily life and social structures. Five years after the town became a symbol of climate change by recording a pan-European temperature record of 48.8°C in the nearby area of Monasteri, residents are facing a new reality of persistent high temperatures.

Local social hubs, such as the Piazza del Popolo, remain deserted during the day, and traditional customs like ‘pigghiari u frescu’—where families gather outside in the evening to enjoy the breeze—are being disrupted because heat persists late into the night. Serena Spada, the local Councilor for Culture, described the situation as ‘another kind of lockdown,’ noting that even families with small children are forced to remain indoors as outdoor temperatures remain hostile until late afternoon.

Beyond social impacts, the heat is affecting local economic activities, including agriculture and apiculture. While the 2021 record was initially viewed as an isolated event, the increasing frequency and duration of heatwaves have turned the town into a focal point for observing the long-term consequences of climate change in the Mediterranean region.
