Flu and COVID-19 vaccination efforts expand in Spain and the United States
In Spain, medical experts are debating whether influenza and COVID-19 vaccination campaigns should be conducted simultaneously or on separate schedules. While both aim to prevent severe illness, the target populations differ. COVID-19 vaccination focuses on preventing serious cases in individuals over 70, residents of care homes, pregnant women, and those with high-risk conditions or immunosuppression. In contrast, the flu vaccination campaign aims to reduce both individual severity and community transmission, extending the age threshold to those over 60 and including children aged 6 to 59 months and essential service workers.
In the United States, Cedars-Sinai has launched mobile health clinics to increase flu vaccine accessibility in Los Angeles. This initiative comes as the 2026-27 flu season shows earlier than usual activity and high levels of influenza on the West Coast. The program utilizes mobile medical clinics to reach vulnerable populations, including young children, seniors, and individuals with chronic illnesses, to mitigate risks of complications such as pneumonia and hospitalization.
