Flu season preparedness: New vaccines and nutritional guidance
As flu season approaches, health officials and researchers are highlighting new preventative measures and nutritional supports. In the United States, a new vaccine has been designed specifically for adults over the age of 50 to address concerns regarding vaccine effectiveness in older populations.
The CDC has noted the growing prevalence of the influenza A(H3N2) virus subclade J.2.4.1, also known as “H3N2 subclade K.” While not inherently more dangerous than other strains, it can cause severe symptoms in older adults, infants, pregnant individuals, and those with chronic comorbidities. Data indicates that adults aged 65 and older account for the majority of annual influenza-related hospitalizations.
In the United Kingdom, health guidance emphasizes seasonal wellness through supplementation. The NHS recommends vitamin D intake during winter months due to reduced sunlight. Additionally, experts suggest that maintaining gut health through probiotics and ensuring adequate levels of Vitamin B, magnesium, and Vitamin D can support immune function during the colder months.
