Flu vaccinations linked to lower dementia risk in seniors

Flu vaccinations offer significant health benefits beyond protecting against respiratory illnesses like COVID-19 and RSV. A recent study indicates that for older Americans, there is a strong correlation between flu vaccinations and a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Specifically, the high-dose flu shot recommended for individuals over 65 may reduce the risk of these conditions by up to 40%.

Regarding timing, health experts suggest the ideal period for vaccination is in September or October, before flu season typically begins in late October. Because it takes approximately two weeks for the immune system to respond to the vaccine, getting vaccinated before peak activity—usually between December and February—is recommended. However, it is rarely too late to receive a shot, as protection is beneficial as long as the flu continues to circulate, which can occur in the U.S. until late May.
