Fluminense appoints club legend Fred as Sub‑20 head coach

Fluminense announced on 21 July 2026, the club’s 124th anniversary, that former striker Fred will become the head coach of its Sub‑20 team. Fred will take charge at the club’s training centre in Xerém on 3 August, succeeding Felipe Canavan who moves to the Sub‑17 side. His technical staff will include assistant Bruno Barros, performance analyst Conrado Aguilar and fitness coach Jefferson Souza, with Gabriel Pinho as Souza’s assistant; Kepler Inocêncio remains as technical supervisor.

Fred, a club legend with 381 matches and 199 goals for Fluminense – the second‑highest scorer in its history – previously coached Fortaleza’s Sub‑17 and Sub‑20 squads, winning the Supercopa Capital in Brasília. He holds UEFA A and CBF PRO coaching licences and served as Fluminense’s director of planning (2022‑2024), contributing to the 2023 Libertadores, 2024 Recopa Sudamericana and domestic titles. Upon his appointment he said, “Volto com o mesmo amor de sempre, muita vontade de trabalhar e de ajudar a formar grandes jogadores e grandes pessoas…”.
