Barclays to cut 5,000 jobs amid AI-driven modernization

Barclays has announced plans to reduce its global workforce by approximately 5,000 positions, representing about 5% of its total headcount. The bank confirmed that 1,000 roles have already been eliminated, with an additional 4,000 cuts expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Chief Executive Officer C.S. Venkatakrishnan described artificial intelligence as the “icing on the cake” rather than the primary driver, noting that the cuts are part of a broader technological modernization and cost-reduction strategy. Approximately 60% of the job reductions will impact support functions, including software developers, as the bank seeks to increase productivity through automation.

The announcement coincided with third-quarter financial results showing a 12% increase in pre-tax profits to approximately £2.3 billion. Barclays aims to achieve efficiency savings of roughly £1.1 billion by 2027 through these structural changes and continued investment in technology.
