Flávio Bolsonaro’s photo with alleged Vorcaro militiaman sparks political controversy
A photo released by ICL on 15 July shows Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL‑RJ) standing beside Luiz Phillipi Machado de Moraes Mourão, known to police as “Sicário”. Federal Police label Sicário as a key operative of a private militia linked to businessman Daniel Vorcaro, former owner of Banco Master. The image was taken in 2022 at a hotel in Rio de Janeiro’s south zone. Bolsonaro said he does not know the man, receives countless photo requests and questioned the picture’s provenance, even suggesting it might be AI‑generated. ICL’s technical analysis – five AI‑detection tools and InVID – found no evidence of manipulation, prompting the senator to remark, “É irresponsável tentar atribuir qualquer significado pessoal a uma imagem aleatória.” Mourão was arrested on 4 March during Operation Compliance Zero, later died by suicide in Federal Police custody. Party leader Valdemar Costa Neto later admitted he had seen the photograph weeks before it went public, contradicting Bolsonaro’s claim of surprise. The episode adds to growing scrutiny of Bolsonaro’s pre‑presidential campaign and alleged connections to Vorcaro’s corruption probe.
