Lula’s vote‑soliciting remarks at Bahia PT convention spark legal action

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made explicit requests for votes during the PT state convention in Bahia on 1 August 2026, urging supporters to vote for his allies and for himself. The Partido Novo filed a representation with the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE) alleging early‑campaign propaganda and seeking condemnation of Lula, Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues and Senate candidates Jaques Wagner and Rui Costa. Novo also asked that videos of the convention be removed from digital platforms and that the maximum fine of R$ 25 000 be applied to each implicated official. The TSE has received the representation and is reviewing the case. Lula later admitted the breach of electoral law and said he expected to be fined, recalling a prior R$ 15 000 penalty for a similar incident in May 2026.
