FMC Rønland to close factory, affecting 400 jobs and environmental management

FMC Rønland, formerly known as Cheminova, has announced it will close its production facility at Harboøre Tange by the end of 2026. The closure will result in the loss of approximately 400 jobs, a development described by Anders G. Christensen, Chairman of the Midtjylland Regional Council, as ‘immensely sad’ for the Lemvig community.

The shutdown has raised urgent concerns regarding the management of extensive soil and groundwater contamination at the site. The area contains three generations of pollution, specifically at Høfde 42, the former Cheminova factory grounds, and the Rønland peninsula.

Currently, FMC voluntarily pumps and treats contaminated groundwater to prevent seepage into the surrounding environment. Following the closure announcement, Region Midtjylland is seeking dialogue with both the company and the Minister for the Environment to ensure long-term environmental protection and to clarify how contamination will be managed once FMC's voluntary mitigation efforts cease.
