FMC Rønland to close Harboøre plant amid pesticide export debates

FMC Rønland, formerly known as Cheminova, has announced it will cease operations at its facility in Harboøre by the end of 2026 following years of financial losses. The closure will significantly impact Denmark’s export of pesticides that are prohibited for use within the European Union, including substances such as malathion, dimethoat, and chlorpyrifos.

The decision follows discussions within the Danish government regarding a potential national export ban on such chemicals. Environment Minister Maria Reumert Gjerding has indicated that the government is exploring national measures to ensure Denmark does not export environmental and health risks that are not permitted domestically, especially after EU-level efforts to ban these exports stalled.

Politicians, including MEP Per Clausen, argue that a national ban is necessary to prevent the remaining export of dangerous pesticides and to ensure no new exports of these substances emerge from Denmark. The facility has historically been a major employer in the West Jutland region, deeply integrating itself into the local community through housing and social programs, despite long-standing controversies regarding its environmental impact.
