FMCG sector faces growth challenges amid inflation and shifting spending
The fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector in India is facing significant growth challenges due to inflation, shifting consumer spending patterns, and increased competition. A report by Kotak Institutional Equities suggests that sustaining revenue growth over the next three to five years will require strong execution and portfolio shifts toward higher-growth categories, as consumers increasingly allocate more spending to electronics, durable goods, and lifestyle products.
Nestle India is navigating these headwinds by leaning into quick commerce and e-commerce to drive growth. In its Q2 results, the company reported momentum in digital platforms through improved product availability and channel-specific offerings. Additionally, Nestle India noted strong growth in organized retail and its out-of-home business.
Despite these gains, Nestle India Chairman and Managing Director Manish Tiwary highlighted the reality of rising food inflation and commodity cost pressures. To mitigate these issues, the company is focusing on innovation, productivity improvements, and operational efficiencies. While some commodity prices like coffee and wheat are expected to remain range-bound, cocoa prices remain volatile due to weather concerns in major producing regions.
