FMCSA announces crackdown on driver training schools and illegal trucking

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has initiated a crackdown on commercial vehicle driver training, removing over 110 schools and proposing the closure of more than 160 others due to inadequate driver training and vetting processes. To combat illegal trucking practices, the agency is launching the Joint Task Force Crossroads of America, a collaboration involving the FBI, DEA, ICE, and state attorneys’ offices.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy indicated that the task force may also target trucking companies that hire underqualified drivers, specifically noting those who lack English language proficiency. This follows reports of English Language Proficiency (ELP) violations ranking high among out-of-service orders during recent inspections.

In corporate news, autonomous trucking company PlusAI has announced a new agreement to merge with Texas Ventures Acquisition III Corp, a special purpose acquisition company, aiming to join the U.S. stock market later this year. Additionally, the FMCSA is moving forward with hours-of-service pilot programs scheduled for 2027, having completed pre-tests for the methodology.
