FMCSA approves amber beacons for autonomous trucks
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has granted a five-year exemption allowing certain Level 4 autonomous trucks to replace traditional emergency reflective triangles with amber beacons mounted on the vehicle cab. This regulatory shift addresses a significant logistical barrier for driverless transport: the legal requirement for a human to physically place warning triangles on the road during a breakdown.
The exemption, effective from October 2026 through October 2031, specifically applies to companies like Aurora Innovation and Kodiak AI that meet strict criteria. These vehicles must operate within validated operational domains and utilize beacons that flash amber light both forward and backward from designated mounting points. The beacons must be activated within five minutes of a stop and must include redundant power sources.
To maintain safety standards, operators using this exemption are prohibited from transporting passengers or hazardous materials. They are also required to submit annual reports and notify the FMCSA within five days of specific accidents involving the use of these beacons. This decision is seen as a critical step toward the commercial deployment of fully automated freight transport on American highways.
