El Salvador's two historic opposition parties, the right‑wing ARENA and the left‑wing FMLN, named former congresswoman Mayte Iraheta and union leader Rafael Aguirre as their presidential candidates for the February 2027 election. Both parties held primary votes on 26 July 2026 to confirm the tickets.

Incumbent President Nayib Bukele, who secured more than 80 % approval after a crackdown on gangs, is running for a third consecutive term. A constitutional reform passed by the Bukele‑controlled Congress altered the constitution to allow indefinite re‑election and moved the presidential vote forward to 2027. Bukele’s party, Nuevas Ideas, has already confirmed his candidacy.

International NGOs, including Amnesty International, allege that Bukele’s security campaign under a state of emergency has resulted in serious human‑rights violations that could amount to crimes against humanity. The FMLN also announced former nurse Madaí Santos as its vice‑presidential candidate alongside Aguirre.
