El Salvador opposition names presidential candidates for 2027 election
El Salvador’s two traditional opposition parties have formally selected their presidential nominees for the February 2027 election. The right‑wing Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) chose former deputy Mayte Iraheta as its candidate, while the left‑wing Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) nominated physician and union leader Rafael Aguirre. The FMLN also announced former nurse Madaí Santos as its vice‑presidential candidate.
Incumbent President Nayib Bukele, who was re‑elected in 2024, is running for a third consecutive term after a 2021 constitutional reform—passed by the legislature controlled by his Nuevas Ideas party—removed the presidential runoff, extended terms and made indefinite re‑election possible. Bukele’s popularity exceeds 80 percent, largely credited to his aggressive anti‑gang security campaign, which has been praised for lowering homicide rates but condemned by international NGOs such as Amnesty International for alleged human‑rights violations that could constitute crimes against humanity.
The opposition faces a steep uphill battle: ARENA now holds only two seats in the Legislative Assembly and the FMLN lost all representation in the 2024 elections, limiting their institutional influence ahead of the contest against a president who controls the executive, legislative and judicial branches.
