Fnaïr musical group sparks controversy over song title

The Moroccan musical group Fnaïr has sparked significant controversy following the release of their new song titled ‘Maroukiya’. While the song aims to celebrate the beauty and presence of Moroccan women, the title itself has drawn widespread criticism on social media.

Many Moroccans have expressed discomfort with the term ‘Maroukiya’, noting that while it may appear to be a simple expression of Moroccan identity, it carries negative and derogatory connotations within certain regional linguistic contexts, particularly in Algerian discourse directed toward Morocco. This sensitivity was heightened by the participation of Algerian music arranger Sami Zenati in the project.

In response to calls for an apology or the removal of the song, Fnaïr issued a statement defending the choice. The group clarified that the title is an artistic expression of pride in Moroccan culture and identity. They also emphasized that Zenati was responsible only for the musical arrangement and had no involvement in writing the lyrics or selecting the title. Fnaïr further argued that the terms ‘Marouki’ and ‘Maroukiya’ have been used previously in Moroccan cinema and art. However, these justifications have not quelled the backlash, with critics arguing that the group failed to consider the current regional political and cultural sensitivities.
