FNV union rejects mandate for social security budget cuts

The Dutch trade union FNV has stated it does not feel obligated to meet specific budget cut targets during negotiations with the government regarding social security. FNV chairman Hans Spekman emphasized that while the union is open to discussing improvements to unemployment (WW) and disability (WIA) benefits—which could potentially impact the budget—they are not working toward a predetermined savings mandate.

Following a meeting at the Catshuis with Prime Minister Rob Jetten and Social Affairs Minister Hans Vijlbrief, Jetten described the discussion as “ontzettend constructief” (extremely constructive), though substantive negotiations are yet to begin. Minister Vijlbrief identified the WIA disability benefits as a primary focus of the talks.

The government aims to reach agreements on several points by the spring. If the cabinet and unions fail to reach a consensus or achieve sufficient savings, the resulting budget shortfall may be covered by other departments, particularly the Ministry of Education.
