Focus on Sickle Cell Foundation urges Ghana to include disease education in national curriculum

Amos Andoh, founder of the Focus on Sickle Cell Foundation (FUSO Foundation), is advocating for the inclusion of sickle cell disease education within Ghana’s national curriculum. The foundation has submitted educational materials to the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) to support this initiative.

Andoh emphasized that education should address medical complications, genotype compatibility, and the social stigma associated with the condition. He noted that introducing these topics in schools would allow young people to make informed decisions regarding relationships and marriage before entering adulthood.

The foundation has also proposed these changes to the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, and the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education. To make the information more accessible to youth, the foundation developed comic-based educational materials using visual illustrations to combat misinformation and stereotyping.
