Focused Energy to build world's first laser fusion plant in Germany

The German startup Focused Energy is preparing to build the world’s first commercial laser fusion power plant at the site of the former Biblis nuclear fission plant. Based in Darmstadt, the company aims to lead the global market for laser fusion technology, utilizing existing infrastructure at the decommissioned site, including grid connections and buildings.

Focused Energy recently secured $240 million in its initial funding round, cited as the largest first-round financing in the history of the global fusion industry. Additionally, the European energy giant RWE, which owns the Biblis complex, has invested 60 million euros into the project.

According to Ulrich Sigel, vice president of Focused Energy, the company has set an ambitious timeline: launching a laser fusion demonstrator within five years, constructing a pilot plant within ten years, and establishing the first commercially competitive laser fusion power plant within fifteen years. The future facility is expected to have the potential to produce nearly 1 gigawatt of electricity.
