Foggia: Hundreds of skeletal remains found in former Military District

Archaeologists and speleologists have discovered hundreds of skeletal remains within the underground chambers of the former Military District in Foggia, Italy. The site, formerly the Caserma Oddone and an ancient Franciscan convent, contains two large vaulted rooms covering more than 100 square meters.

The Speleo Team Montenero, supported by archaeologist Nicola Gasperi, identified significant accumulations of debris and bone fragments during a recent reconnaissance. The discovery occurs amidst urban regeneration projects for the site, which include the construction of an ADISU student dormitory and the Giordaniano Museum, funded by approximately 27 million euros in various regional and national resources.

Local authorities, including Mayor Maria Aida Episcopo, have noted the historical significance of the site, particularly regarding its Franciscan past and potential links to the Blessed Giacomo. The municipality is utilizing laser scanning technology to create a precise digital map of the underground spaces. A technical report will be submitted to the Superintendency to determine the nature of the remains and guide future archaeological interventions and construction plans.
