Foggia officials propose 24/7 veterinary emergency services

A bipartisan motion has been presented in Foggia, Italy, proposing the establishment of a 24/7 veterinary emergency service. The initiative aims to provide care for stray animals as well as pet dogs and cats for a fee. The proposal suggests using public notices to identify available private veterinarians to cover shifts through private clinics or a new animal shelter.

Supporters of the motion, including local councilors Francesco Strippoli and Nunzio Angiola, seek to challenge the administration's stance that the municipality lacks the competence to manage such emergency services. The proposal draws inspiration from the model used in Melilli, which approved measures in February 2025 to outsource veterinary emergency services, microchipping, and sterilization.

On a broader scale, the demand for continuous veterinary care is a growing issue across Europe. Discussions within the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe highlight the tension between increasing public demand and the economic realities of the profession. Providing 24/7 services is costly, requires hard-to-find qualified personnel, and faces structural challenges in rural or marginalized areas due to urbanization and market logistics.
