Fogo Island drivers demand road safety after fatal bus accident

Drivers and residents on Fogo Island, Cape Verde, are calling for urgent road safety improvements following a fatal bus accident that killed 25 people. The route, which connects São Filipe to rural communities and the Chã das Caldeiras volcanic region, is characterized by steep descents, sharp curves, and unprotected cliffs.

Local transport operators report that the road lacks essential safety features, including proper signage, lighting, and protective barriers. Drivers noted that visibility is frequently compromised by heavy fog at higher altitudes, increasing the danger for both locals and tourists visiting the volcano. While the road was constructed approximately four years ago, commuters and taxi drivers state that the current conditions continue to cause significant fear and difficulty for travelers.
