FOI report links youth digital vulnerability to social environments

A new report from the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) suggests that social media consumption is not the sole driver of youth involvement in criminal networks. The study, which utilized over 6,000 survey responses and various interviews, indicates that digital vulnerability is closely tied to a youth's social, local, and demographic circumstances.

While researchers found a correlation between the consumption of violent digital content and a more accepting attitude toward crime and violence, they emphasized that this does not prove a causal relationship. The findings suggest that social and local conditions often play a more significant role in criminal involvement than digital exposure alone. The report highlights the need for increased adult presence and support within both physical and digital environments.
