Folashade Oluwafemiayo appointed captain of Nigeria for 2026 Commonwealth Games

The National Sports Commission (NSC) of Nigeria has appointed multiple Paralympic and world champion Folashade Oluwafemiayo as captain of Team Nigeria for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland (23 July–2 August 2026). NSC Director‑General Hon. Bukola Olopade said the choice was “intentional… based on merit”, praising her professionalism, resilience and record‑setting performances. Oluwafemiayo is a four‑time world champion and two‑time Paralympic gold medallist who set a 152.5 kg world record at the 2021 World Para Powerlifting Championships and won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games heavyweight event.

The appointment also highlights the significant contribution of Nigeria’s para athletes, who have historically secured a large share of the nation’s medals at the Paralympic, Commonwealth, African and World Championship events. Team Nigeria will head to Glasgow with a mix of seasoned champions and emerging talent, aiming for podium finishes and upholding the values of excellence, discipline and sportsmanship.
