Folegandros connects to the mainland Greek electrical grid

Folegandros has been successfully connected to the mainland Greek electrical grid via a high-voltage network passing through Naxos and Santorini. This development is part of a 385.7 million euro interconnection project for the southern Cyclades islands, implemented by ADMIE.

The project includes the islands of Santorini, Folegandros, Milos, and Serifos. A key component is the 60 km, 150 kV underwater cable connecting Santorini and Folegandros, which features integrated optical fibers and was laid at a maximum depth of 340 meters.

To minimize environmental and visual impact, the new high-voltage substation in Folegandros utilizes Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) technology and features a stone-clad architectural design to blend with the local landscape. The interconnection aims to end energy isolation for these islands, reduce electricity production costs, and allow for the decommissioning of polluting oil-based power units, thereby reducing CO2 emissions.
