Foley artists use everyday objects to create cinematic sound effects
The profession of Foley editing involves the artistic recreation of non-verbal human and object sounds for films, audiobooks, and video games. Despite the rise of artificial intelligence and digital sound effects, Foley artists use physical props and everyday objects to create organic, unique soundscapes.
Modern cinematic sound design often involves recording individual sound components on multiple tracks and later synchronizing them through editing, volume adjustments, and filtering to form a cohesive whole. This practice is named after Jack Foley, who defined the profession in the 1930s. Sound artists like Simone Nowicki utilize specialized studios and a wide array of instruments and props to simulate everything from sword fights and creaking stairs to explosions.
