Folic acid intake recommended before pregnancy to reduce infant health risks

Medical experts and health authorities emphasize the critical importance of folic acid intake for reducing the risk of neural tube defects in infants. Folic acid, a type of vitamin B, is essential for cell division, DNA synthesis, and the proper formation of the neural tube, which typically occurs by the sixth week of pregnancy.

Because the neural tube forms so early, health officials, including Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, recommend that women begin consuming at least 400 micrograms of folic acid daily at least one month before conception. This proactive approach ensures adequate levels are present during the most sensitive stages of fetal development.

While folic acid can be obtained through foods such as leafy greens (komatsuna, broccoli), natto, and certain seafood, supplements are often recommended to ensure consistent and efficient intake, especially for those experiencing morning sickness or those planning pregnancy in advance.
