Austrian household financial assets exceed one trillion euros

Financial assets held by Austrian households have surpassed the one trillion euro mark for the first time, according to new data from the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB). This represents a seven percent increase in total assets.

Wealth distribution remains highly concentrated, with the top ten percent of the population holding 70 percent of these assets. Bank deposits remain the largest single category, accounting for 34 percent (approximately 341 billion euros) of total assets, followed by business participations and securities, which each hold a 24 percent share.

The OeNB reported that the household savings rate fell from 11.5 percent to 9.7 percent over the previous year. While savings remain higher than pre-pandemic levels, factors such as geopolitical uncertainty, weak economic performance, and rising consumption are influencing behavior. Despite the decline in the savings rate, higher interest rates have made saving more attractive than in recent years. The Wifo expects the savings rate to decrease further to 8.4 percent in 2026.
