Folsom State Prison inmate dies after being found unresponsive

A 43-year-old inmate, identified as John Joseph Pine, died at Folsom State Prison on Saturday after being found unresponsive in his cell. According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Pine was alone in his cell at the time of the incident.

Correctional officers attempted life-saving measures and moved Pine to the prison’s treatment and triage area, but emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at approximately 6:30 p.m. Pine had been serving a 21-year sentence for assault with a deadly weapon and infliction of great bodily injury. The Sacramento County Coroner will determine the official cause of death.
