FOMO: The psychological impact of social media comparison

The phenomenon of FOMO, or ‘fear of missing out’, has intensified due to the constant connectivity provided by social media. This anxiety stems from the perception that others are experiencing more rewarding events, such as parties, travels, or academic opportunities, while the individual is not.

Young people are identified as particularly vulnerable to this cycle of comparison. Residents in Encamp and other areas report feeling compelled to attend social events even when they lack the desire, simply to avoid the feeling of missing out on significant moments. Experts note that constant access to the lives of others can prevent individuals from enjoying their own current experiences.

Digital wellbeing expert Jordi Camós suggests that while the human desire to be informed is natural, modern technology has amplified the scale and frequency of this feeling. Psychologists warn that the continuous comparison facilitated by platforms like Instagram can lead to negative psychological spirals.
